Read-Me for MetadataMagic™
Versions 2.0.3 and 2.0.3J
Note: The "J" variant is for processing files developed in Japanese, and requires the Japanese version of FileMaker Pro.
License
The files associated with MetadataMagic™ and MetadataMagic_PI™ are covered by a software license documented elsewhere. Review the license agreement before using MetadataMagic.
System Requirements
MetadataMagic requires:
- FileMaker Pro 5.0, 5.5, or 6.0
- For Macintosh: MacOS 8.5 & up, or MacOS X
- For Windows: Windows 95 & up
Installation
a) Put the MetadataMagic folder someplace convenient
Place the Conversion Issues Database folder at the same level as the MetadataMagic folder
See ReadMe_ConversionIssues.html for more detailed information
b) Quit FileMaker Pro if it is running
c) MetadataMagic includes a FileMaker Plug-in:
If you have more than one version of FileMaker Pro, you will need to do the following for each version you plan to use with MetadataMagic:
Macintosh - Copy the contents of the folder named "For FMP Extensions (Mac)" to the "FileMaker Extensions" folder of your "FileMaker Pro" folder.
Windows - Copy the contents of the folder named "For FMP System (Win)" to the "C:\Program Files\FileMaker\FileMaker Pro 5\System\" directory.
WinZip Note: If you use WinZip, check the "Use folder names" box in the extract dialog, or you will receive a 'replace existing file?' warning for "MetadataMagic_Strings.str" (This is because there was one copy in the "For FMP Extensions (Mac)" folder and a duplicate one in the "For FMP System (Win)" folder).
If you do unzip without "Use folder names", the subfolders won't be created, so you will need to copy the files named "MetadataMagic_Strings.str" and "MetadataMagic_PI.fmx" to the "FileMaker Extensions" folder of your "FileMaker Pro" folder.
If you have installed FileMaker in a custom location, the path may be different from the one above.
Please consult the license agreement to review the restrictions regarding the use of MetadataMagic.
Deinstallation
Macintosh - Remove the MetadataMagic files from the "FileMaker Extensions" folder of your "FileMaker Pro" folder
Windows - Remove the MetadataMagic files from the "C:\Program Files\FileMaker\FileMaker Pro 5\System\" directory
Operation
1) After installing the plug-in as directed above, prepare your target solution for processing:
- Do NOT open the target solution
- Put all of the target files in one folder (subfolders are not processed)
2) Open MdM_Opener.fp5 or MdM_Databases_.fp5
3) Click "Process a New Solution..."
- You will be asked to locate the MetadataMagic_Strings file if it was not found in the folder with the MetadataMagic plug-in. Check that it was installed correctly. If so, click "Auto-Locate" to search again, or click "Choose File..." to manually locate the strings file.
4) Specify Folder Containing Target Databases
Click "Choose Folder..." and select the folder containing your target files
- ALL files in the target folder will be examined to see if they are FMPro files, and will be included in the processing if so. As a result, all the target files must be in the one folder. Subfolders are not scanned, all of the target files must be at the same level.
- You will NOT be asked to locate missing files to resolve external script calls or relationships; if you want a file included, put it in the target folder, otherwise references to it will show file missing, unknown, etc.
6) Provide the Master Password(s)
In the field provided, enter the "Full Access" master password for the solution. If some files in the solution require a different master password, enter the additional master passwords separated by the return key.
7) Name the Solution
In the field provided, you may enter a name for this processing run/target solution to distinguish it from other MetadataMagic processing runs.
8) If desired, click "Options..."
- The processing options rarely need to be changed, however if you want to process .FP3 files, or automatically quit when processing is complete, this is where you indicate those choices.
- Users outside of North America may want to change the parameter separator from the US standard of comma-space to semicolon-space.
- Click "Back..." to go back to the setup screen
9) Click "Go!"
- If some of the target files are still open or were not closed properly, you will be notified of the problem files. Close any open target files, and Open then Close any files that were not closed properly.
- If master passwords for some of the files were not supplied, the problem files will be listed. You can omit these files from processing, or go back and enter more master passwords.
- After locating the files and resolving any of the above problems, processing will continue without assistance. You will not be asked to locate missing files, or print scripts, etc. The LogFile will indicate progress.
- If you need to do something else on your computer, MetadataMagic can continue processing in the background (although it takes longer).
- If you wish to stop processing, type command-period (Mac) or escape (Windows). After interrupting processing, the metadata will be incomplete and you should delete it instead of attempting to interpret partial information.
10) When processing is complete, use the links within the metadata to navigate through your solution. To learn more, click "Documentation" on the main menu and review the Navigation and other links.
Troubleshooting
- Make sure the MetadataMagic plug-in is installed in the appropriate folder for FileMaker plug-ins on your computer. If you have more than one version of FileMaker, make sure the specific copy you are using has the plug-in installed.
- If the plug-in is installed but not responding, check the Plug-in configuration tab of the FileMaker Application preferences to make sure the MetadataMagic plug-in is enabled:
[Edit Menu - Preferences - Application... - Plug-ins tab, MetadataMagic_PI checked]
- Without the plug-in, you can still navigate through previously processed metadata.
However the View and Switch popups will not function without the plugin, and you cannot (re-)process a target solution.
