Read-Me for Conversion Log Analysis Tool™

Conversion Log Analysis Tool

The Conversion Log Analysis Tool gives you the ability to track changes made to your files when they are converted to FileMaker Pro 7 format. It highlights errors and modifications that occurred in the conversion process, generates reports, and even offers suggestions for troubleshooting your converted files, making it an essential tool as you transition to FileMaker Pro 7.

Introduction

When FileMaker Pro 7 converts a set of ".fp5" files (that run with FileMaker Pro 5 and FileMaker Pro 6) to the new ".fp7" format, many changes occur in the converted files. In most cases, these changes are identical or similar enough in function that simple files will work as expected immediately after conversion. For more complex FileMaker solutions problems can arise, however, and those problems may not always be apparent with initial use of the newly converted files.

The only way FileMaker Pro 7 gives you to see what changes were made to your converted files is the "Conversion.log" text file generated during the conversion process. This file contains essential information you need to know about your converted files, including all errors encountered during the conversion, as well as significant modifications. The problem is that this text file also contains a lot of insignificant log data as well. Sifting through all of that data to find the essential information can be an arduous task in a text editor.

The Conversion Log Analysis Tool solves that problem for you. You can quickly import the "Conversion.log" document into the Conversion Log Analysis Tool file and instantly sort data, search for specific errors and modifications, and print reports. The Conversion Log Analysis Tool will even suggest what to check and actions to take to minimize the likelihood of problems in your converted files.

Once you have converted any file to ".fp7" format, the Conversion Log Analysis Tool is the first place to go to check for errors and possible trouble spots. It is an essential tool as you transition your files to FileMaker Pro 7.

Using the Conversion Log Analysis Tool

Demo Mode

If you are using an unregistered copy of the Conversion Log Analysis Tool, you will be able to test all of its functions but only on the included sample data.

Registration

Visit the New Millennium Communications, Inc. website at http://www.newmillennium.com to fill out a registration form and purchase a license. We will send your registration license via email.

To register your copy of the Conversion Log Analysis Tool:

- Copy the complete registration license from your registration confirmation email.
- Paste it into the Registration String field in the Conversion Log's Register layout.
- Click the 'Register' button.
- Confirm that the word "registered" appears in the Registration Pass/Fail response field.

Step 1: Convert Your Files

In FileMaker Pro 7, convert your file or files from ".fp5" to ".fp7" format. (If you have questions about how to do this, see the FileMaker Pro Help notes.)

Step 2: Duplicate the Conversion Log Analysis Tool

The Conversion Log Analysis Tool file is designed to organize the all of the conversion data from a single "Conversion.log" document (which includes all files converted in a single conversion process). Because you may wish to convert several sets of files at different times, we recommend that you create a new copy of the Conversion Log Analysis Tool for each conversion process you wish to analyze.

- Duplicate the Conversion Log Analysis Tool file.
- Rename the duplicate copy for the set of converted files you will analyze.
- In the new Conversion Log Analysis Tool file, click the 'Clear Log' button to delete any previous data.

Step 3: Import Conversion Log Text File

- Click the 'Import Conversion Log' button.
- Select the "Conversion.log" text file generated by FileMaker Pro 7 in the conversion process.

The Conversion Log Analysis Tool file will import all of the conversion data, instantly highlighting errors and other potential problems that may be present in the converted files.

Step 4: Search for Errors and Generate Reports

You can either immediately view the conversion data by clicking the 'List View' button, or you can quickly generate a report:

- Click on the 'Report' button.
- For a standard report...
+ Select the Issue Categories you want to focus on.
+ Select the Files you want to view.
- For a custom find...
+ Click the 'Custom Find' button.
+ Enter all data you wish to search for.
- Click the 'Find' button.

It's that simple!
